Beginning English Learners

  • Provide pictures and visuals for important events and vocabulary.
  • Use a picture glossary with words such as Patriot, independence, tax, and revolution.
  • Give students sentence frames, such as “The colonists were upset because ___.”
  • Allow students to label pictures, draw a timeline, or discuss ideas with a supportive partner.
  • Read source excerpts aloud and provide simplified versions while preserving the original source's meaning.

Intermediate English Learners

  • Provide vocabulary lists and graphic organizers.
  • Use sentence starters such as “This source suggests ___ because ___.”
  • Pair students with supportive classmates for source analysis.
  • Break complex texts into shorter sections and review unfamiliar words.
  • Encourage students to explain their ideas in complete sentences using evidence.

Advanced English Learners

  • Provide longer or more complex source excerpts.
  • Ask students to compare conflicting perspectives and explain why the sources differ.
  • Encourage students to use academic vocabulary and multiple pieces of evidence.
  • Invite students to write a more detailed argument about the Revolution's effects on different groups.

Additional Student Supports

Students who need extra support may receive extended time, audio versions of texts, chunked directions, teacher check-ins, and partially completed timelines. Students who need enrichment may investigate another historical perspective or compare how two sources describe the same event.

All students will work toward the same essential question, with different levels of support based on their needs.
